Taking Time for Yourself

Hussey FamilyBy Julie Hussey

Back in June, my husband and I took our first trip together, alone, since our wedding five years ago. Turns out we really do like each other, we have not lost the ability to have a conversation, and we can sleep past 7 a.m.

Now August's heat is upon us, chaos reigns, and June is way back when. I am definitely ready for cooler temperatures and the start of preschool has me thinking about the year ahead. The marching on of time reminds me not to forget the insights I found that precious vacation week.

Take time to enjoy being an adult. Your children are some of the greatest people in the world, but they didn't get there without your contribution. Celebrate by doing something healthy and fun that is for adults only.

Explore something new without kids. Parenting is a life full of lessons, but it is really nice to learn something which is not child related. Not only did our trip take us to a place where neither of us had ever been before, I was able to snorkel for the first time. I cannot wait for the opportunity to snorkel with my kids, but it was really nice to relish in my experience and not theirs. Try a new dish, take a class, or go somewhere (you've never been even if it is just across town). If you need an excuse, research shows children are more open to new things when they see their parents trying new things.

Remember, tomorrow cannot happen without today. If you envision celebrating your tenth anniversary, don't forget to celebrate your fifth. Achieving milestones or even taking vacations are great, but they are even better when looking back at all of the little things that we did to get there. Make certain to count the little steps and enjoy the journey.

Don't feel guilty making time for yourself. I know it is easy to say, but closing the door to puppy dog eyes isn't easy. I want the best for my child and that means being a parent who is at her best. Carving an hour for the gym a few days a week, scheduling a regular date, or even just taking a long soak with the door closed can do wonders for mental and even physical health.
